WordPress 101: How to customise your site with themes and widgets

Customising your WordPress site helps make it look and function the way you want. Themes and widgets are two easy ways to personalise your site. In this post, I’ll walk you through how to use both to give your site the look and functionality you need.

Choosing a theme

A theme controls the design of your site. To find a theme, go to the “Appearance” tab in your WordPress dashboard and click “Themes.” Browse the available options or upload a theme you’ve purchased. Once you find one you like, click “Activate.”

Customising your theme

After you activate your theme, you can customise it by going to the “Appearance” section and clicking “Customize.” Here, you can adjust settings like colours, fonts, and header images. You can preview your changes in real-time before saving.

Adding widgets

Widgets are small blocks that add functionality to your site, such as a search bar, recent posts, or social media feeds. To add a widget, go to “Appearance” and select “Widgets.” Drag and drop the widgets you want into your sidebar or footer areas.

Customising widgets

Each widget will have its own settings, which allow you to change its title, content, or appearance. Play around with different widgets until you find the right combination for your site.

Themes and widgets are simple yet powerful tools that allow you to customise the look and feel of your WordPress site. With just a few clicks, you can create a site that’s both functional and visually appealing.
