Adding pictures to your WordPress website doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it’s really easy once you know where to click! Whether you’re writing a blog post, creating a page, or updating your homepage, here’s exactly how to add and format images — step-by-step, with no tech-speak.
Step 1: How to add a picture
- Open the post or page where you want your picture to go.
- Click the little + button (you’ll usually find it near where you’re typing).
- Choose Image from the list of blocks.
- Now you have three choices:
- Upload – Pick a picture from your computer.
- Media Library – Use a picture you’ve already uploaded before.
- Insert from URL – Copy and paste a link to a picture that’s already online.
Once you pick your picture, it will appear right where you clicked!
Step 2: How to move and size your picture
When your picture pops up, some buttons will appear above it:
- Align Left / Center / Right – This decides where your picture sits on the page.
- Resize – Grab the little blue dots at the corners and drag to make the picture bigger or smaller.
Want your picture to be the same width as your text? Look for an option called “Wide Width” or “Full Width” and click it.
Step 3: How to make your picture better
- Add Alt Text – This is just a short description of what’s in the picture. It helps people who use screen readers and it helps Google too. (Example: “Golden retriever playing on the beach.”)
- Add a Caption – Write something under your picture if you want, like a funny comment or a credit.
- Link the Image – You can make the picture clickable if you want, by linking it to a page, post, or website.
Step 4: Extra tips if you want to get fancy
- Use small file sizes – Big pictures can slow your website down. Try to shrink them before uploading.
- Use the right format – Photos? Use .jpg. Pictures with clear backgrounds (like logos)? Use .png.
- Set a Featured Image – If you want a picture to show up when you share your post on Facebook or when people browse your blog, you can set a special one called a “Featured Image.” (Look on the right side of your editing screen.)
Quick troubleshooting
- Picture too big? Click it and drag the corners smaller.
- Picture not where you want? Click and drag it up or down.
- Accidentally deleted it? Don’t panic – click “Undo” (top left corner) and it will come back.
In short
Click +, choose Image, upload your picture, and play around until it looks how you want. You really can’t break anything — and if you do, there’s always an Undo button! Adding images is one of the easiest ways to make your WordPress site look great.
